runs_on_batteries: (me and the boy against the world)

[personal profile] runs_on_batteries 2019-07-13 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Just like the other two, Tony was stressed, hungry, and keeping it together only on the surface. His favorite tactic had always been to stay busy- which was very difficult when there was so little to do. However, he kept futzing with this or that, trying to find power sources to tap into or things to fix. He had actually found something to recharge Peter's stupid video but it was irritating him even on mute, so he hadn't told the kid about it yet.

He'd been real short with the boy the last day or so. It wasn't right and he wishes he could do something to make it up to him, but he can't seem to keep his emotions in check.

He knew he was going to die. There was no delusion in his mind about that. His one and only goal was to figure out how to save Peter. Obviously, he didn't tell the kid this. It would be too heavy of a burden for the both of them to bear while Tony was alive. He'd been putting off eating his space fruit today. If he could wait just a little longer maybe he'd be able to starve till tomorrow and let Peter have two. He just had to save the kid.

That's why when Nebula started shouting for him, he came running. Okay, that wasn't true. He would've come running anyway, but he was so afraid as he hurried to the back of the ship he'd find the boy dead. He almost passed out just seeing the boy unconscious in Nebula's arms. He put a hand to his face and barely managed to hold back a sob. "What happened?" He demanded. He put a hand to Peter's neck to check for a pulse.

Nebula has done what she can to help the other two as she knows she won't survive without them. She tried to get the ship to the correct jump point but their still ten away from earth and with the navigation system down she can't even tell what the nearest planet is or if it would even do them any good.

She's kept her thoughts to herself for the most part and allowed Tony Stark to do what he did best. They were definitely in better shape with him around. She's not too thrilled about a child being on the ship with them but it wasn't as if they could just leave him. Now, it appeared he had a health issue that caused him trouble breathing.

Nebula has a gentle hold him now as he's gone slack in her arms, his pulse is thrumming erratically which isn't a good sign. Careful not to drop the teenager, she checks to see how much air is coming out of his nose or mouth. If he is breathing, she can't really feel it.

"He started gasping and told me he couldn't breathe." She explained, adjusting to scoop the unconscious teen up to move him back to the front of the ship. "Does he have any health issues that might have caused this?"

He takes a steadying breath as he watches Nebula check if he's breathing. When she doesn't look like that went the way they hoped, he can feel the panic rising inside him like bile, burning his insides. No! He won't. He had to focus on the matter at hand. This was a problem and he had to solve it. Nothing more.

"He needs oxygen. I saw a mask yesterday. Follow me." They needed more power to run the system to pull more oxygen from the air into the mask. What could they use? They could use his suit. They could use Nebula's mechanical side. They could use the video game. No that last one definitely didn't have enough juice. Once they were where the mask was hooked to a machine, he flipped it on and it sputtered a bit and then came on. Thank god! There was something still in the ship! It wasn't enough to make the ship move, but apparently this was minor enough it would work.

He wasn't going to say what the consequences of using this machine were. He figured Nebula could figure it out and Peter, he hoped would connect the dots.

Nebula follows after the billionaire, sparing a glance down at the boy. She knows he's going to try and help the child but being cold and practical as she is, she can't help but consider that it might be kinder to just let the boy slip away first. There's zero promise of rescue at this point and their oxygen stores will run out in fourteen days if they're lucky-less if they use the oxygen machine on a boy that might not even wake.

She doesn't voice her concerns though and merely lays him on table nearby, backing away so the mask can be strapped to his face, and watching the older man.

"We could lose a full day's worth of oxygen doing this." She advises, no plans to try and stop him, just an observation.

She voices the thing he couldn't face until he has no choice. As soon as the words were out of her mouth, an eerie calm overtakes him and he shakes his head. "No."

He turns and looks at her, shaking his head. "No. That's only if three of us continue to breathe it. If there are only two then it'll easily make up for the amount lost now. You're going to make sure he survives. You understand me? He lives, no matter what happens to you or me."

She just watches him closely, not moving to challenge him. Her eyes flicker downwards to the passed out boy with the oxygen mask now strapped to his face, her expression cold and emotionless. They're likely to run out of oxygen before rescue regardless of if two or three of them are breathing it.

"I am willing to sacrifice a day." It's not like there's much she'd do with it. "I'm not willing to sacrifice you." Neither she, nor Peter will stand a chance if they lose Stark-she's not an idiot but she's also not an engineer-she's almost a machine. "I'm the child feels the same."

She gently smooths some of Peter's hair out of his face and watches him a moment before pulling away and going over to the cabinets to sift through what little medical supplies they have. Maybe there's a medical scanner that can tell them precisely what happened.

"Fine. But I will sacrifice the day before that. I want the two of you to have a chance. But I'll set everything up as best I can till then." However, he might not take any more of the food. He wasn't sure. He didn't want to put them at risk needlessly, but he valued his presence less than Nebula seemed to be.

While she's looking for items, he turns and does the same. He finds a tube with something inside. He opens the vial and sniffs it. It didn't have a very strong scent. He looks at the lid. Was that a syringe? "What do you make of this- oh, you check this and I'll work on the scanner."

He trades her and hits the emblem on his chest for his suit to encase him. "Friday, open a channel of power between the suit and the scanner. We need to charge it, so give it whatever energy it needs."

Nebula merely offers a half nod, planning herself to cut back on her fruit and soup intake. She still feels hunger but being partially mechanical meant that she'd survive for longer without food than they would-of that she's certain.

She takes the half-put together syringe and returns to going through available supplies as what's left of Friday boots up and powers on the medical scanner. The Scanner comes to life and the screen reports inflammation in the airways and a slight build up of mucus.

Nebula has set a case of vials on the table and waits to here the diagnosis so she knows what to try.

[personal profile] runs_on_batteries 2019-07-13 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
"Friday, what would cause inflammation like this?" Tony asks.

Asthma attack. Came the AI's voice.

"For real? Peter has asthma?" He asks surprised. Of course, he's already hitting buttons on the scanner to see if there's a prognosis or instructions on what to do with an asthma attack. "Nebula, we need something to reduce the inflammation. Is there anything cold we can add to the oxygen or- or a steroid or.. what are in those vials?"
blumeanie: (Default)

[personal profile] blumeanie 2019-07-13 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Inflammation. Asthma maybe rare in the areas she's been to, but inflammation is calmed by steroids. She sifts through the vials and grabs one and prepares the syringe.

"Just what we need." She states, the guardians didn't have much in the way of state of the art medical equipment but at least one of them (Probably Gamora) had the sense to at least have some emergency medical supplies stocked.

She hesitates a moment before handing the syringe over to Tony, figuring he'd know better where to inject the medicine into a human child.

Tony doesn't skip a beat to take the syringe. He gets her hesitation the moment he sees it. Obviously, she wouldn't know enough about a human body.

He steps in and straightens out Peter's arm. The screen from his suit helmet zoomed in and highlighted just where he needed to put the needle. As he sticks it into Peter's skin, he remembers how much the boy hates shots. Well, this one just might be his favorite now as it was saving his life.

Tony had stayed by Peter's side, unable to commit to an emotion or a practical thought. He just stayed in a limbo of fear and despair as each passing moment ticked by. There were a million different worries he could be focused on but for once he was spared the never ending list. There was nothing and would be nothing until the boy woke.

He looked up when he heard Peter start to move. He'd never felt so old, so tired, so worn in all his life but in that single moment, neither had he felt so much joy. Peter was alive.

And then he wanted to strangle him. "Since when? What's going on Peter? What aren't you telling me?" They weren't angry questions, just almost defeated sounding ones. Like Peter keeping them from him had been some kind of betrayal.

Tony's eyes narrow and his jaw tightens at that joke. The kid wasn't the least bit funny right now.

"Your vision is suffering?" Tony asks, finally a little of that anger creeping up into his expression and voice. "Any other symptoms you'd like to share with me or do you want to wait and let me try to figure out the problem after you've passed out and can't help me? Are you trying to die Peter or just enjoying seeing how hard you can make this situation on me?"

Tony put his face in his hands and groaned. Terrific. They were trying to keep this boy alive and now he just went from being a super strong, fast healing super kid to just a regular dumb kid. He wanted to scream or cry or throw a fit, but he just takes another ragged breath and sits up.

"Wonderful."

He hoisted himself up off the stool he'd been sitting in. "You, rest. Use that machine till you feel you'll be fine without it- and really fine. Not 'I'm going to make up crap' fine. And then turn it off."

He just.. he needed to get away from the situation for a few minutes. Why couldn't Quill have stocked this place with more alcohol?

They had two days left of oxygen.

Tony knows what he promised Nebula he'd do. He's done absolutely everything he can to set the ship up for the two survivors in his absence.

He makes his farewell message to Pepper.

He goes and picks up the syringe he'd used on Peter and takes the vial he knows to be fatal. He wants to say good bye to Peter, one last time. He sees the boy sleeping and comes over to sit next to him. He fills the syringe. "If I'd had a son... I'd want him to be just like you." He brushes some of his hair off Peter's face. Sitting back against the wall next to the bed, he thinks of Pepper and tries to hold that thought in his head.

Needle in hand... and..

Pepper is a wreck. She hasn't seen or even heard from Tony almost twenty days. She hasn't slept or ate well in all that time, worried sick about what had become of Tony when he got on that ship. Or had he vanished too? It's late at night when his message comes through-Friday's voice sounding from the ceiling and stating that she had a message coming in on the secure server from the Boss-Tony.

Heart in her throat, she throws her covers off and runs to the main room where the others are still trying to plan their next move-if there is a next move. One look at her face and Steve works out that she's heard from Stark. They can go and get him. With help from Rocket, Banner, and even some from Pepper herself they're able to pinpoint the signal and Carol wastes no time before shooting off into the night sky.

For the first time in nearly twenty days Pepper can feel hope rising in her chest. Rhodey stays with her out in cold front lawn, also eager to see his best friend. It's almost five in the morning when Carol returns with the Milano in tow, lowing it to the ground.

The last thing Tony would've expected was to be saved at the very last moment. He hadn't thought he could possibly be so lucky. Instead, he was certain they were in trouble. As the ship dipped and moved while being guided by some unseen force, he quickly stashed away the needle. Maybe, just maybe he could be of some good for Peter and Nebula to fight whatever was coming.

After that short exertion of energy, he can't find the strength to move again. He stayed where he'd fallen against the wall, half sitting, half laying. It was where he could still see Peter, but not close enough he could actually protect him or even shake him awake. The ship stops. Is this when Thanos is going to come through the door and kill them all? If he'd only known, he would've used the poison on Peter instead. It would've been merciful compared to what that sadist would likely do to them.

The door opens. He lifts his metal clad hand, ready to fire at whatever it was.
rescuecommittee: (OMG I can't take this)

[personal profile] rescuecommittee 2019-07-13 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Tony will be pleased to know that it is not Thanos that's taken control over the ship, Captain Marvel as she's going by, rips open the door to the Milano, pulling it right off it's hinges. Nebula offers a startled look at the sudden intrusion.

Pepper is close behind, taking a minute to get up on the ship and moving in to greet her fiance she'd worried was lost forever. "Tony! Oh my god, are you in there?" She calls out.
runs_on_batteries: (looking over shoulder lost)

[personal profile] runs_on_batteries 2019-07-13 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Tony feels his heart jump at the sound of the door being ripped open. He fires but it is way off its mark, probably hitting the ceiling of the ship instead- he wasn't too sure. His hand drops as his energy was just about gone.

And that's when he hears her voice. "Pepper?" He tries to call, but his voice is hoarse from thirst and disuse. "Pepper!" He fights to sit up straighter, to get up but it's no use. His body was too frail to do it. "Peter! Wake up!"
rescuecommittee: (come here you idiot)

[personal profile] rescuecommittee 2019-07-13 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Carol glances up at the part of the ceiling now fitted with a nice hole from Iron Man-well, to be fair they have been stranded in space for twenty days. Pepper ducks down even if she's nowhere near in danger of being hit and moves over to Tony. Despite the absolute mess he's in, she's still just so relieved to see him.

"Tony, can you stand?" If not, she'll help him up and casts a glance over at the sleeping teenager. Her hearts tightens in her chest but for now, it was important to get everyone inside and looked over.

"Carol, can you help the kid?" She asks kindly. Carol offers a nod and moves over to the sixteen year old, ruffling his hair.

"Come one kid, up and atom." She states. Peter makes a small noise but only stays asleep. They really should have expected that, she thinks before moving to scoop him up. Nebula has since let herself out of the ship and went to talk to Rocket about the others.
